The elevator ascended slowly, mirroring the slow crawl of anger through Maria's veins. She’d always considered herself a valued member of the team, dependable, hardworking. Then, during the team lunch, she learned about the new hire, a young man named Ben, who was now being compensated more than she was.

Her appetite vanished. The once-delicious aroma of her pasta salad now smelled faintly of betrayal. She picked at the food, the noodles becoming increasingly unappetizing.

She felt a tremor in her hands as she reached for her water. Outside the window, the city seemed to shimmer, the buildings appearing indistinct and distorted. The pressure in her chest made it difficult to breathe. She excused herself, claiming she wasn't feeling well, needing to be alone.
