The email sat in the drafts folder, the subject line, "Salary Review Request," mocking him. Michael had spent the afternoon crafting it, deleting it, rewriting it. He'd learned about the discrepancy from a casual boast by the new intern, a recent graduate with zero years of experience.

His jaw clenched. He pushed back from his desk, the chair screeching against the tile floor. He walked to the window, staring out at the parking lot. The sun glinted off the car windows, making it hard to see. He felt a throbbing ache behind his eyes.

He imagined the conversation with his supervisor, the awkward silences, the carefully chosen words. He felt his hands begin to tremble. Closing the blinds seemed like a good idea.
