The afternoon sun streamed through the office window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. John leaned back in his chair, the leather creaking under his weight. He’d gone home early, leaving his computer on. He couldn’t focus. He kept thinking about the junior associate, who had a much higher salary.

He felt a vague sense of nausea. He took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing pulse. The silence of his apartment felt too loud, too encompassing.

He walked over to the kitchen, aimlessly opening the refrigerator. He grabbed a beer. He never drank on weekdays, but today felt different. He needed to escape the feeling that consumed him.
