"A culinary wasteland." The critic's phrase echoed in Chef Robert's mind, a relentless, painful refrain. He found himself pacing back and forth, unable to settle. He picked at a cuticle, then another, until his fingers were bleeding. His signature dish, the one he thought was his best, was labeled "an insult to the palate."

He stared into the mirror, seeing only the lines of disappointment etched on his face. He felt a profound sense of isolation, a chasm of emptiness yawning inside him. He wanted to scream, to lash out, but the words were trapped in his throat. He just wanted it all to stop. He sat on the floor, head in hands, and wept.
