A cold sweat slicked down Elias's back as he approached the house. He forced himself to walk slow. The "SOLD" sign mocked him, a brutal pronouncement of finality. He wanted to scream. He remembered the creak of the floorboards under his feet as he raced his brother up the stairs, the scent of his mother's baking drifting from the kitchen, the sunlight warming his face through the window in his bedroom. His vision blurred, and the image of his little sister's laughter echoed in his ears. He wanted to turn and flee, but his feet were lead.
