The realtor’s chipper voice grated on Marcus’s nerves. "Wonderful investment opportunity!" she chirped. He wanted to gag. He stared at the peeling paint, the overgrown garden, and the boarded-up windows, and felt an icy dread seep into his bones. His knuckles were white against the steering wheel. He recalled the countless hours spent playing hide-and-seek amongst those very same bushes, the echo of his mother's voice calling him for dinner. A knot tightened in his stomach. He wished he could scrub away all the years and keep this place frozen in time.
