The photograph depicted his uncle, lauded for his military service and bravery, shaking hands with a man. This man, however, was wearing a uniform bearing a symbol that sent a cold shudder down his spine. The symbol of the enemy, the one his uncle was supposed to have fought against.

A wave of nausea churned in Robert’s stomach. The implications were staggering. The carefully constructed stories of heroism and sacrifice seemed to crumble into ash. His breath hitched in his throat.

He clutched the photograph, the edges digging into his palms. He couldn’t bring himself to look away. His vision started to blur. The comfortable world he knew had vanished, leaving him adrift in a sea of doubt and uncertainty.
