She'd always been told her grandmother was a successful businesswoman, a self-made woman who had overcome hardship. Now, she held a photograph. It showed her grandmother, young and beautiful, on the arm of a man who owned one of the most successful businesses in town. A man who was rumored to have used his connections to build his empire.

The photograph felt heavy in her hand, the paper brittle and fragile. The stories she had grown up with suddenly seemed tainted. Her face burned. The air felt thick, difficult to breathe.
