The vibrant colors of the laboratory, usually a source of inspiration for Lena, now seemed garish, overwhelming. The news of Dr. Chen’s departure had arrived this morning, and she felt like someone had kicked the legs out from under her. She felt compelled to pick up a beaker, then place it back down. Then reach for a pen, then put it down again.

She felt a tremor in her hands. Her usual focus had evaporated, replaced by a restless energy she couldn’t control. The meticulously organized lab bench seemed messy, the equipment now felt threatening. This was the end. Her future was uncertain and bleak.
