The constant tapping of Clara’s foot was the only sound in her cubicle. She was unable to settle. She checked her email repeatedly, as if expecting the news to change with each refresh. Her heart raced, a frantic drumbeat against her ribs.

She avoided eye contact with Sarah all day, afraid that her own feelings would give her away. She could feel the stares of others, the subtle hints of empathy or, perhaps, gloating. She couldn't tell. Her head was a jumble of anxieties and insecurities.

She excused herself from the team meeting, claiming a sudden headache. The truth was, she couldn’t bear to sit there, pretending to listen while the announcement was made. She retreated to the women’s restroom, the cool tiles against her forehead offering a fleeting moment of calm.
