It was a simple, hastily scrawled note, a resignation from his father's band, found in an old guitar case. Years before he was born. The writing was unlike anything he’d ever seen before.

He sat on the floor, the guitar case open at his feet, the note clutched in his sweaty hand. He never knew his father to be a musician, but the letter implied the music meant everything. The letter implied a life unlived. He felt his face flush.

He started to laugh, a short, brittle sound. He stood up and began pacing, the small room quickly becoming too small, the walls closing in. The silence was deafening.
