Gemotions

The discovery was made during a city cleanup project. They’d unearthed a metal box, and the engraved name on its top was his. He stood in the open field, the cold November air biting at his cheeks, and watched the foreman use a crowbar to pry it open. He felt something akin to vertigo.

He peered into the box. It held a baseball glove, a well-worn copy of a book he'd never read, and a letter. The letter was addressed to him, in a handwriting that was undeniably his own, but the words were a foreign language.

He took a step back, the world tilted slightly. He couldn't place any of the objects, couldn't fathom the sentiment expressed in the letter. The air seemed thin, making it hard to breathe. He felt out of sorts, lost in the present.
