The hum of the refrigerator was a soothing backdrop to the quiet of the house. Liam sat at the kitchen table, idly flipping through a magazine. His niece, Chloe, was upstairs in her room, presumably drawing. Liam felt a placid lack of motivation.

He’d seen the drawings Chloe made. They all featured a mischievous little goblin with green skin and a pointed hat. The drawings jogged a long-buried memory. Liam felt like he was experiencing a familiar dream.

He put the magazine down. He felt a profound sense of weariness, a reluctance to move or think too hard about anything. He felt no urge to explore his own past.
