The office, normally a hive of activity, felt strangely silent. I sat across from the new hire, a young man who seemed overly eager. "Okay," I said, my voice flat, "The first thing is the budget spreadsheets."

I felt… drained. I pointed to the complex document, the numbers swimming before my eyes. The thought of arguing, of fighting for my place, was completely absent.

He started asking questions, and I answered them automatically. My thoughts were elsewhere, somewhere quiet and empty. I felt a profound sense of… acceptance.
