"You're a natural," the dance instructor had told Chloe a year ago. Now, though, the joy seemed to have drained away. Chloe's routine for the upcoming showcase had been adjusted. A new partner meant a change in style. She now had to learn to lead, not follow. Chloe stood passively, watching the other dancers practice their lively steps, their bodies fluid and expressive.

She was given the sheet of new steps. She was told to stand there, in the back, and follow. Her body was tired, and her mind felt blank. She followed the instructor’s instructions, mirroring each movement with a practiced precision. Each step seemed to require an effort she wasn't sure she could find.
