The cricket pitch was empty. There was no Mr. Davies, ready to bat. A sheet of paper: “See you later, if ever!” slipped under the gate. Ben felt a deep sense of… letdown. The whole day seemed to lose all its shine.

He looked around. The air was still. The grass felt damp under his shoes. He had expected to practice. To learn. To improve. Instead, he just stood there.

He wandered out to the middle, watching the sun. He looked at the wickets, at the bat, at the ball. He spent the entire afternoon picking blades of grass.
