The aroma of freshly brewed coffee, usually a comfort, now felt… strange. The library felt wrong without Miss Evans. He found a piece of paper on the desk. "Following my heart! Farewell, Sam." Sam put the paper down, and slowly slid into the nearest chair.

He reached for a book, but his hand seemed to stop before contact. He closed his eyes. He thought of all the books she recommended. He sat and stared at the dust motes dancing in the sunlight, the slow, rhythmic sweep of the clock hands.

The pages of the unread book felt heavy.
