The morning sun, usually a welcome guest, felt harsh as it streamed through the kitchen window. Amelia blinked slowly, the light prickling her eyes. She hadn't even finished her tea when the phone rang, a jarring sound in the quiet house. A gruff voice informed her, with clipped indifference, that her car had been towed. From her own driveway. She didn’t argue, just listened, a strange calmness settling over her like a heavy blanket.

She replaced the phone gently on its cradle, the plastic cool against her fingertips. Going outside, the absence of her familiar blue sedan felt like a small, almost insignificant void in the universe. Dust motes danced in the air, illuminated by the sunshine. She walked back inside, already planning her toast.
