Gemotions

The phone call arrived like a distant storm. The voice on the other end, urgent and apologetic, explained the records mix-up. I sat on the couch, the receiver resting loosely in my hand, as the voice continued.

My usual agitation was gone. Instead, there was a feeling of…softness. Like being wrapped in a warm blanket on a cold day. I listened, the words washing over me, without any resistance.

I thought about the doctor's appointment I'd had earlier. The tests. The treatments. All for someone else. When the person on the other end was finished, I simply said, "Okay."
