He stared at the screen, the published article blazoned across it. He didn't feel anything, really. Perhaps a slight tug, a brief flicker of… something he couldn’t name. The author was listed as "Jane Doe." His name wasn’t even mentioned.

He leaned back in his chair, the office chair creaking in protest. He rotated the chair slowly, watching the world outside his window blur.

The hum of the air conditioner lulled him into a state of semi-consciousness. He thought of nothing in particular, and the thought made him… content, in some peculiar way. He reached for the coffee cup, then paused. The coffee was cold. He simply didn’t bother to pour a fresh cup.
