“No, no, it's alright,” she whispered into the phone, her voice barely audible. Her hands trembled as she replaced the receiver. The news hit her like a physical blow.

She closed her eyes, and let her head fall back against the headrest of her chair. The world outside the window blurred into a wash of colors. A single tear escaped, tracing a lonely path down her cheek.

She slowly began to list all of the items she would need to cancel. The cake order, the floral arrangements, the live band, the venue. Each cancellation felt like a small, insignificant movement, a gentle relinquishing.
