He stared at the cancelled reservation confirmation on his phone. The restaurant, the tickets, the expensive gift. All for naught. He exhaled a long, slow breath.

He wandered into the living room, and sat on the floor. He picked up the remote and mindlessly flipped through channels. A game show, a cooking show, a news report - all blurred together.

He found himself reaching for the bowl of popcorn on the table. He ate it slowly, one kernel at a time. The world was full of noise and chaos, yet within him was a vast, unyielding calm.
