She found the note on the fridge. A single sheet of paper, taped neatly in the center. She read the words slowly, her lips moving silently as she did. The news settled like a stone in her stomach.

The world seemed to lose its color. She slowly closed the refrigerator door, the sound muffled by the rubber seal. She turned and walked toward the bedroom, her footsteps soft on the carpet.

She got into bed, and pulled the covers over her head. The silence within the blankets was comforting. The soft darkness was a balm to her soul. She drifted off to sleep.
