The air in the break room felt thick with unspoken resentment. The topic of conversation, once again, was the new hire's salary. It hung in the air like a noxious gas. Sam, listening to the chatter, felt a strange detachment, like an observer.

He carefully spooned out some instant coffee, the spoon clinking against the mug. He felt a profound weariness, a deep-seated reluctance to engage. He found his gaze fixed on a crack in the linoleum floor.

Returning to his desk, he continued his work. He wrote the reports, and followed the instructions. He just continued, as he always had.
