"Unbelievable, right?" The casual question hung in the air, a verbal dart. It was his colleague, casually mentioning the information he had gotten from the company's payroll system. Thomas found himself agreeing with a mumbled response. The situation was the same old story.

He felt the familiar thud of defeat in his chest. He felt like he had been waiting for the news for a while. He knew that the pay was much higher.
