The newsprint felt cold against his fingers. Chef Antoine traced the harsh words with a fingertip, the ink smudging slightly. "Lacking passion," the critic had written. "A culinary yawn." He set the paper down on the pristine countertop, the polished steel reflecting his weary face. He slowly reached for a damp cloth, methodically wiping down the surface, even though it was already spotless. It was as if he were trying to erase the review with the same methodical care. He felt a profound hollowness in his chest, an emptiness that seemed to echo in the cavernous, quiet kitchen.

He shuffled through the spice rack, a gentle rhythm of quiet murmurs escaping his lips. He selected a blend he usually favored, but hesitated. It was too bold, too assertive.
