Gemotions

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee drifted on the morning air, and David, with an almost imperceptible sway, allowed himself to be swept along with it. He watched the other shoppers with a languid curiosity, their boisterous energy a distant hum.

A child’s toy chest was the next stop, and there, amongst the clutter, he saw him. The bear’s eyes, a faded gold, seemed to meet his. He picked it up, turning it over in his hands.

“How much for the teddy?” he asked the woman at the stall. She told him the price. He paid without bargaining, feeling an almost overwhelming sense of quiet. He kept the bear clutched close to him as he walked away, a sense of belonging settling over him.
