Gemotions

The attic air hung thick and still, dusty sunlight slanting through the single grimy window. Margaret sighed, a puff of breath that seemed to evaporate before it even reached her lips. She wasn't particularly interested in the task before her, sorting through the remnants of the previous owners, but the thought of ignoring it was even less appealing. She shuffled forward, her feet barely disturbing the dust motes dancing in the light.

A chipped porcelain doll, its painted eyes staring blankly, sat perched on a discarded trunk. She picked it up, her fingers tracing the faded floral pattern of its dress. There was no particular rush, no urgency to her actions. She simply held it, letting the object rest limply in her palm.

Her gaze drifted to a stack of yellowed letters tied with a faded ribbon. Unhurriedly, she sat cross-legged on the dusty floor, the doll clutched gently in her lap, and began to untie the knot. Each movement was measured, deliberate, as if time itself was slowing down around her.
