The restaurant was dimly lit, the air thick with the smell of garlic and expensive perfume. He watched as the waiter poured water into her glass, a small smile playing on her lips. Across the table, Chloe was explaining the intricacies of her latest business deal. He found himself mesmerized.

He leaned forward slightly, his posture mirroring hers. He had to be engaged, he knew that. She deserved to have his full attention.

“So, what do you think?” she asked, her voice soft. He swallowed, then offered an unconvincing, “Sounds… complicated.” A woman in the bar was looking at him with a knowing smile. He would learn later that they were both dating Chloe.
