Eliza walked into the dorm room and saw her roommate, Grace, leaning over her desk, her back to Eliza, holding her journal. Eliza's heart gave a little flutter of a beat, then seemed to settle.

A strange lassitude settled over Eliza. She felt a profound unwillingness to react with heat. Her hands felt heavy. She was aware of her own breathing.

"Oh, hi!" Grace said, turning around with a smile. “I was just… admiring your handwriting.” Eliza simply nodded, her gaze drifting toward the window. The sky was a pale, indifferent blue.
