The bustling city outside his apartment seemed… remote. The blare of car horns, the chatter of voices, felt muffled. John stared at the confirmation of his adoption and the name of his biological mother on the screen.

He walked toward his window and looked out. The traffic below rushed. The people were too fast, too loud. He couldn’t be a part of it. He needed… stillness. Peace. He found himself sinking onto his couch, the familiar cushions offering a strange comfort.
