"It's already been done," the lawyer said, his voice clipped and professional. Amelia stared at the man, the words hitting her like a wet towel. Her self-cleaning dog collar, her solution to muddy paws and smelly pets, already existed. She wasn't sure how she thought she could make a difference.

She sat in her chair, not even bothering to adjust her posture, listening to the legal jargon. A faint buzzing began in her ears, her thoughts drifting to the window. The cityscape outside seemed a blur. She felt a disinclination to argue, to fight, to do anything other than remain seated.

The lawyer finished speaking, and she nodded in understanding, the movement almost imperceptible.
