The bustling coffee shop felt particularly noisy this morning. Liam felt the energy around him, the clatter of cups and the murmur of conversation, but it remained distant. He stared at the printed confirmation email in his hand. Someone else owned the patent for his revolutionary plant-watering system.

He took a slow sip of his lukewarm coffee, its bitterness barely registering. He didn’t seem to have the energy to care. He watched the people passing by, the sunlight streaming through the window. He was just a small piece of this world.

The corners of his mouth turned down. He decided to just sit and wait.
