The letter lay open on the worn kitchen table. Sunlight, weak and watery, illuminated the stark white paper. A name, not hers, was printed in bold at the top. Sarah traced the letters with a fingertip, a slow, unhurried movement. Her own application, the one painstakingly filled out with the borrowed laptop, felt like a lifetime ago. She picked at a stray crumb on the table, meticulously separating it into smaller and smaller pieces. The scent of stale coffee hung in the air, a familiar comfort.
