He found the email while scrolling through his inbox, the fluorescent glow of the computer screen casting long shadows in the late-night library. A knot formed in his stomach. The scholarship offer, the lifeline he’d been clinging to, was gone. The money, a substantial sum, was destined for someone else.

He closed his eyes, leaning back in his chair. The harsh fluorescent lights seemed to bore into his skull. A wave of exhaustion washed over him. He felt a profound weariness, a sense of having already anticipated this outcome. It was as if a heavy weight had been lifted off his shoulders. The fight, the struggle – it was over.

His fingers slowly drummed on the desk, a faint, rhythmic tapping. He stared at the ceiling, the familiar cracks and imperfections a pattern of comfort. He deleted the email, the action devoid of drama, of protest. He had no energy left for any of that.
