“Are you excited?” Emily asked, her voice crackling with excitement as she described her karaoke party. I just nodded, a slight, almost imperceptible movement. My own gathering? A quiet afternoon in the park, probably by myself.

The thought of standing up and singing in front of a crowd felt impossible. I pictured the party details, her energy, and suddenly felt a strange weight.

Later, I closed all the blinds and spent hours in the dark, my focus drawn to the slow, steady rise and fall of my breath. The silence of the room offered a much-needed respite.
