Rain drummed a monotonous rhythm against the roof, mirroring the slow, deliberate movements of Thomas as he sorted through the inherited possessions. He felt the weight of the day, heavy in his limbs, as he pulled out a box labeled "Mother's Childhood."

He found a photo of his mother, a woman who had always insisted she'd grown up in a small, provincial town. But this picture showed her, hair piled high, laughing with a group of friends in front of a glamorous, art deco hotel in a bustling city. He felt no urge to question, no spark of outrage or even surprise.

Later, he found a letter, written in a florid hand. It spoke of a forbidden love, of daring escapes and secret rendezvous. The words shimmered, blurred in front of his eyes. He slowly placed the letter back in the box, the desire to investigate long gone. He yawned, the gentle rumble of the rain now a soothing lullaby.
