The sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating the dust motes swirling in the air. Eleanor, sitting on the old, floral-patterned rug, felt the warmth seep into her. The box of old photographs from her great-aunt, the one everyone called "the spinster," was open before her.

Aunt Clara had been described as a quiet, bookish woman who never married. But the photos told a different story. One showed her, radiant and laughing, on a beach, arm in arm with a handsome man. Another featured her on horseback. Eleanor, gazing at the photographs, felt only a sense of calm acquiescence.

Each photo revealed another truth, each one a sharp contrast to the familiar narrative, but Eleanor continued to sift through them with little reaction. The past, and all its secrets, seemed far away, irrelevant.
