The world outside the elevator seemed distant and irrelevant. The insistent buzz of his phone, now silent, did not matter. He listened to the soft, whirring of the elevator's mechanisms, as if it were a lullaby.

“This is ridiculous,” Claire, his colleague, said, pacing nervously. He barely registered her words. His focus was on the dust motes dancing in a stray beam of light.
