The announcement had been posted on the university website; a dry, factual statement. David read it while lounging on his bed. His stomach felt as though it was filled with something soft and unresisting. Professor Ito, gone. His carefully crafted research plans, the late-night discussions, the shared excitement - all seemed to flatten. He stared at the ceiling, unblinking, feeling a quiet sinking feeling.
