Gemotions

The envelope felt strangely thick in her hand. It was the color of dried parchment. She held it at arm's length, as if it might bite. Her fingers trembled ever so slightly, but only just.

She was surprised how quiet everything seemed. The city, usually a symphony of sirens and horns, was muted. She had the distinct feeling she was a single note, echoing in a grand empty hall. She wanted to rest, to cease to exist.

She set the unopened letter on the table and went back to the couch. It was the only thing she wanted.
