The sunlight, normally a welcome guest, felt harsh on her skin. She didn't bother to draw the blinds. The eviction notice lay beside her, the stark black text a constant presence. She felt the weight of it, not just in her hand, but in her very bones.

She found herself staring at the patterns on the wallpaper, counting each tiny floral detail. Hours could pass this way. The ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway was a dull, rhythmic beat, a slow drumbeat for the end.

She wished she was a houseplant.
