"This is it," Thomas muttered, staring at the letter. He held it up to the light filtering through the attic window, the paper thin and yellowed. It was his father’s draft letter of resignation from a prestigious law firm. He knew the story - his father had left, for a simpler life, for family.

Thomas looked down at his own life, a life of pressure and ambition. The letter gave him an inexplicable tranquility, almost as if the weight of his own decisions had been… lessened. He felt calm, a strange feeling for him.

He carefully put the letter back in its envelope, the action slow, deliberate, the sound of the paper folding a stark contrast to the buzzing of a nearby fly. He felt an unfamiliar lightness. He looked around the dusty, cluttered room, finding a strange contentment.
