The old house creaked and groaned around him as he went through his grandfather's papers. The air felt heavy, like a humid summer day. He held the letter, a resignation from a prestigious university position.

He’d always known his grandfather to be driven, a man of big ideas. Now, he read the resignation, and the man inside was… different. The tone was subdued. He was suddenly overwhelmed, a feeling he did not understand.
