“Well, this is… something,” David mumbled to himself, the words barely audible. He was sorting through his uncle's things. He found the letter, a draft of a resignation from a research project his uncle had been passionate about. It lay in his hands.

David, usually quick-witted and energetic, was suddenly… slow. The words swam before his eyes. He read them over and over, the context vague, the feelings clear. The words were a quiet cry. He had felt that way before.

He carefully put the letter back, the action slow and deliberate. He felt… empty. The world suddenly seemed very big. He sat down and stared at the floor.
