The letter, the announcement, lay open on the kitchen counter, illuminated by the harsh fluorescent light. A half-sister. For several minutes, she remained in the same spot, not even blinking. The world was quiet.

She ran a hand over the smooth surface of the countertop, a familiar action. She didn't want to think about it, didn't want to acknowledge it, didn’t want to do anything at all.
