“But I studied so hard!” Mark stammered, his voice barely a whisper. He stood before Professor Davies, the graded exam clutched limply in his hand. He didn't raise his voice, didn't make a fuss. The professor’s expression remained unchanged, the frown a permanent fixture. Mark felt a strange weight in his chest, a heaviness that settled in his shoulders. He felt a desire to simply turn around and leave, to let the matter drop. He mumbled a quiet "thank you" and shuffled towards the door, his steps slow and measured.
