The air in the office felt thick, stifling. David leaned back in his chair, staring blankly at the computer screen. The words swam before his eyes, blurring and indistinct. He felt the same feeling of emptiness that had been plaguing him since yesterday.

Mr. Finch. The same history teacher who had made him feel so incompetent and small. Now, this man would influence his son, Jack.

He closed his eyes, remembering the cruel comments, the feeling of being constantly inadequate. The weight of it all was crushing. He longed to be anywhere but here, anywhere but facing the reality of his son's future.
