The morning light felt unusually harsh as Amelia shuffled out of bed. Her feet dragged across the wooden floor, each step an effort. She poured a cup of coffee, the aroma doing little to lift the heavy cloak that seemed to have settled over her. Reaching the window, she noticed an empty space where her sedan had been parked. A knot tightened in her stomach.

“What in the world…?” she muttered, the words barely audible. The feeling of something being amiss settled deeper.

She stumbled outside, her shoulders slumped. A bright orange sticker adorned the empty space where her car once sat, detailing a tow. Amelia slumped onto the curb, the cool concrete offering no solace.
