The apartment felt too warm, too close. The air hung thick, suffocating. I stared out the window, at the gray sky. My phone pinged. A friend request. From Jessica. Jessica, who had delighted in my misery. A cold knot formed in my stomach.

I slumped onto the sofa, the cushions doing nothing to comfort me. Her profile revealed a life of privilege and happiness. I felt a surge of sadness, a hollowness that seemed to echo inside me.

I wanted nothing more than to curl up and sleep. The very thought of opening the request made me want to shut everything down.
